Award-winning doctoral student’s career boost after breakthrough at a top Nanotechnology Center in Israel

Israel is well-recognized internationally for its scientific excellence and innovation in advanced research and technology. The country’s technological achievements are at the forefront of every field in which it participates.

According to the Israel National Nanotechnology Initiative (INNI), global business surveys consistently place Israel among the most attractive nations for advanced technology development.

Students in the field of science and technology from around the world make Israel their first choice to further their careers.

Orlando Marin is in the final leg of his four-year Doctorate in Physics and Chemistry, a unique multidisciplinary, English-language program at Bar-Ilan University (BIU) in Israel.

He chose BIU because, in his opinion, it “has the greatest Nanotechnology Center in Israel, state-of-the-art research facilities and excellent lecturers”. He had also heard about Prof. Eli Sloutskin, a professor in BIU’s Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials (BINA), and wanted him as a mentor.

“My professor’s research in materials science was, and is, very interesting to me and very similar to what I want to do with my professional career in research and development of materials for medicine,” says Marin.

BINA is a world leader in materials science research. Ranked highly in the world in terms of scientific citations in this area, and a Marie Curie Training Site for Fabrication of Nanoscale Materials, Bar-Ilan scientists are expanding our understanding and control of molecular and atomic self-assembly. Their discoveries are fueling practical advances in a wide range of areas including energy, computers, communication and health care.

Marin is one of these pioneering scientists. He has made an innovative discovery of a new strategy for the formation of faceted particles, a breakthrough that is sure to advance research in the materials science field – an important scientific achievement for the doctoral student.*

He believes the resources at BINA are part of the reason for his discovery. These include his professors and lecturers, but also the tools to which he has access.

“The Nanotechnology Center has the best equipment there is in microscopy techniques, in transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), in scanning electron microscopy and in focus-ion beam microscopy,” says Marin. “The amazing thing about studying here is that any BINA student is able to learn how to use this equipment and to use it yourself to see your samples.

“This is extraordinary in comparison to many other universities,” he says. “Usually, those students have to wait for a long time, sometimes weeks, in order to have access to the equipment. BINA’s faculty is also very flexible in the way they help students, and they even let students with the correct training use the equipment after work hours and sometimes even on weekends.

“Studying in Israel and at Bar-Ilan University have given me, and therefore my career, a huge boost and, from this point on, I expect my opportunities to climb quickly,” he says.

Marin was born in Costa Rica, but grew up in Taiwan. He speaks five languages including Spanish, English, Hebrew, Chinese and Japanese. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from National Chiao Tung University, and a Master of Science in Materials Science from National Tsing Hua University, both in Taiwan.

In 2016, Marin received a Presidential merit-based scholarship (Milgat Nasi) to study at BIU. In 2019, he and his former lab mate, Shir Liber, received the BINA Multidisciplinary Award, and he received the BINA Excel Prize as well. Marin was also selected to participate in the Erasmus+ Student Exchange Program at the University of Granada in Spain last year. He will graduate from BIU in April this year.

Marin came to the university through BIU’s International School, which offers tailor-made programs for English speakers in Israel as well as all the support they need to ensure their success.

“During my time at Bar-Ilan, I have lacked nothing and have been assisted in everything,” Marin said. “The campus has great facilities and we don’t need to travel to other places in order to be able to continue with our research. I like the fact that it’s really easy to socialize, and that everyone is ready to help you. I love the concerts that happen all the time on campus – and the good beer!”

Marin believes that studying abroad has changed his life and that everyone should do it.

“For science students, it’s important to know that everyone in Bar-Ilan’s Nanotechnology Center will help you with your studies and make sure to hasten everything for your research and your future career.

“I have never had a single bad experience at BIU in four years. It has been an experience I can recommend to everyone, especially those who want to broaden their minds and enhance their careers,” Marin concludes.

Bar-Ilan University’s International School will be exhibiting at various education fairs in Europe, South Africa and the Americas over the next few months.
