China Eastern Airlines applies 5G to improve traveling experiences at Beijing’s new mega airport

Passengers will get unprecedented traveling experiences at the Beijing Daxing International Airport thanks to the 5G-based smart services launched by China Eastern Airlines (CEA) at the mega airport to offer passengers all-scenario service information.

Apart from regular notifications of ticket issuance, checking in, boarding, change of boarding gates, and baggage claim, passengers will be informed on the CEA mobile application of the time required to get to their boarding gates and the time when their baggage is loaded on the plane and the carousel. Information about unaccompanied minor service will also be pushed to the mobile phones of the users.

Besides, CEA is also planning to calculate the time to be consumed by the passengers to get to the airport from their respective locations and send the information to their phones. They will also be informed on their phones when entering CEA’s service area at the airport.

Several months ago, CEA launched a permanent electronic luggage tag equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Now, under the cooperation with Chinese tech firm Huawei, CEA upgraded the luggage tag with 5G technology which now allows passengers to trace their luggage on their phones.

The battery-less luggage tag can be re-used and is nonperishable. After the passengers check in through CEA mobile app and tap their phones against the tags, their flight numbers, destinations and other relevant information will be recorded by the tag. Then they can go to a designated counter for activation, after which their luggage will be officially delivered to the handlers.

Compared with the traditional way to check the luggage, the electronic luggage tag can make flying smarter and more convenient. CEA ground service staffs can also have real-time tracking of passengers’ luggage, thus improving handling efficiency.

The second round of issuance of the permanent electronic luggage tags has started, and passengers can apply through the latest version of CEA app.
