Schneider Electric, a leader in energy management and automation, today announced the names of winners of the ‘=S= Electric Energy Challenge’. The second and last round of the initiative saw eleven teams competing for the top three places, through showcasing their innovations and smart solutions to six sustainability-related problems, namely smart buildings, energy, water, mobility, public services and factories. The initiative was launched by Schneider Electric Egypt in collaboration with Innovation @TheEdge, and the Ministry of Investment and International Cooperation, through ‘Fekretak Sherketak’ program, and Falak Startups.

The top place in the initiative was awarded to Proteinea team on the idea of raising insects with the aim to replace fishmeal in aquaculture and animal feeds with sustainable and more environmental insect-based protein. The second place was awarded to Division X, for the idea of building Quality inspection Systems integrated with industry 4.0 revolution by using machine vision and deep learning technologies for helping enterprises get tasks digitalized and automated with more accuracy, low cost and save time.

Lastly, the third award was given to Influx, for their innovation of cylinder of solar cells installed in a vertical position reflected and multiplied by the light of the sun within the result of the multiplicity of these reflections generate electricity and double the reflections produce more energy with less space cells.

In addition, the incubation award who will be receiving training for their ideas from Schneider Electric are Vision for smart energy, Dizaria energy and Joudran.

Following the announcement of the winners of the first three places, a cooperation protocol was signed between Schneider Electric Egypt and ‘Sherketak Fekretak’ program and Falak Startups to launch a nationwide energy challenge initiative to present innovative ideas and solutions, with the aim of supporting energy management, sustainable development objectives and entrepreneurship.

“The idea of ‘=S= Electric Energy Challenge’, which was held for the first time in Egypt, was first introduced by Schneider Electric Egypt and was very well received by all of the company’s officials. When we announced this idea in May for the first time, we were surprised by the large number of applicants, which reached 150 contestants from different categories, whether students, startups or university professors and the categories of applicants varied between teams and individuals,” said Walid Sheta, Regional Cluster President of Egypt, North East Africa and Levant.

“We were extremely excited about the ideas presented by the contestants. During the first round of the initiative for selecting the short-listed 11 participants, we faced difficulty in selection given the high quality of ideas that were in some cases very close.

We placed rules for selection, including strong knowledge about the problems facing smart cities, presence of innovative solutions that serve technology, an understanding of the nature of markets in the region, as well as the team’s ability to develop its skills and the product it is showcasing and its success in selling it in the future; also providing a feasibility study for provided solutions,” Sheta confirmed.

The announcement of the winners of ‘=S= Electric Energy Challenge’ came as part of the activities of Schneider Electric’s ‘Cairo Innovation Summit 2019’, which was held for the second time in Egypt.

A session was dedicated for the eleven short-listed participants to present their smart innovations and solutions to six sustainability-related problems, before a committee of experts that included Sylvain Paineau, EMEA Business Incubation Director; Jean-Louis Stasi, Senior Vice President, Innovation @TheEdge; Mohamed Saad, Senior Vice President for Human Resources, Schneider Electric; Ayman Saeed, Director of Commercial Transformation, Middle East & Africa, Schneider Electric; Karima El-Hakim, Head of Business Development and Investor Relations, Falak Startups; Eslam Mohamed, Director of Entrepreneurship Services Center, ‘Sherketak Fekretak.”

During the session of announcing winners in the initiative, Jean-Louis Stasi, Senior Vice President for New Products at Innovation at Innovation@TheEdge, said: “The Egyptian youths have presented bold ideas aimed at achieving a smarter and more sustainable future in resource management. The selection of winners for the first three places was difficult, especially with the presence of 8 to 9 ideas that were very outstanding.”

“Being a major energy player worldwide, Schneider Electric has a greater knowledge of the market rules and requirements; so, our support for ‘=S= Electric Energy Challenge’ participants will not be limited to financial awards, as we will also be a link between these innovators and the world’s energy experts,” he added.

The top three winners of the ‘=S= Electric Energy Challenge 2019’ received financial prizes, ranging between EGP 40 thousand and EGP 100 thousand, in addition to having the opportunity to be incubated in Schneider Electric Egypt as well as an access to Schneider Electric exchange program.

In July, Schneider Electric announced the short-listed winners in ‘=S= Electric Energy Challenge’, which included eleven participants. These winners were trained by a group of specialized engineers on how to present their ideas and make amendments to achieve more strength and effectiveness for such ideas upon implementation.
